SATURDAYNIGHTLIVE
SEASON 35, EPISODE 18: Tina Fey/Justin Bieber
REVIEW BY: Ian
RATING: TV-14
EPISODE REVIEW:
When Tina Fey is hosting Saturday Night Live, you know it's going to be good. You should always have hopes for when a former writer and a former cast member hosts the show and Tina Fey definitely lived up to those.
I might've given it a higher rating than others might but whatever. I'm only giving it an A- instead of a B+ because I gave J. Lo's episode a B+ and this was better.
Justin Bieber was the musical guest and he came with the right attitude. He wasn't afraid of making fun of himself and he had fun. Justin Bieber even helped Tina Fey sing I'm Every Woman in her opening monologue.
I'm choosing to do a pretty long review, reviewing every sketch and giving my full opinion on it. So I'm going to start now.
For some reason, Kristin Wiig was barely in any sketches. She must have some bad blood with Tina Fey or something.
I do think we'll be seeing at least a Guest emmy nomination for Tina Fey again, maybe even a win.
COLD OPEN:
Fred Armisen, in his only appearance, imitated President Obama, making a public announcement to the people about the new census they received in the mail. SNL parodied it by having him read the questions and having him ask way too personal irrevelant questions that the government doesn't need to know, for example: How Important is the role of Fantasy in your Sex Life? It seemed a little desperate, and for once I would like Fred Armisen to not be in the cold open as Obama, they usually are a little boring. Maybe they should've had a different sketch with Sarah Palin (not the one that aired tonight) to really draw viewers in.
The opening monologue isn't up yet on Hulu but I'll edit the review and post it when it is updated. But basically what you missed was Tina Fey singing I'm Every Woman while introducing people in her life (not real) that help her get organized (for example Steve Martin cameo'd as her tax lawyer).
TEACHER SKETCH:
In this sketch, Tina Fey played an overworked teacher who started to fall for her student, Justin (played by Justin Bieber). She begins to have fantasies of him singing to her and it gets a little out of hand. I thought it was a funny sketch, and Tina Fey portrayed Justin Bieber nicely without it getting a little too weird (although the baby stroller was a little weird).
BROWNIE HUSBAND:
In this sketch, Fey played a woman who rarely talked as it was supposed to be a commercial. A minute and a half long commercial (this isn't paid programming people!) but I don't care about the length. She played a woman who had a brownie husband, which is the product the commercial was advertising. I thought the sketch was clever and still appointed to the true SNL sketch, it was gross in the end.
THE MASTERS:
This by far was one of the best sketches of the night for me. I must've liked it more than others but it was hilarious. Especially Tina Fey as her portrayal of the not real slut Ashlyn St. Cloud which was the highlight of the sketch for me. In this sketch Ashlyn St. Cloud, and Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis who played golf announcers/commentators, commented on Tiger Woods, and golfing mainly. It was hilarious and pretty funny.
SARAH PALIN NETWORK:
It was Tina Fey's disappointing return to impersonate Sarah Palin. It was ratings and guest Emmy desperate, but it had a few good jokes in there, but it also had disappointing jokes. At least it was funny some parts and it was a creative idea. SNL always has the most interesting ideas.
And Now, We're heading along into the incredibly long WEEKEND UPDATE.
First off, Tina Fey had a segment called "Woman's News" which was hilarious. Hopefully she'll do it again when she returns for the Betty White episode next month. I love the Bombshell McGee jokes. They really murdered her with jokes there, just like how Chelsea Handler would do it.
Seth Meyers part of the weekend update was, pretty funny. It had some real jokes in there and wasn't disappointing.
Jason Sudeikis cameo'd as the devil in a part of Weekend Update. It was really funny when he was talking about some of the things that he did from hell (for example: the Jersey Shore season 2 is coming out soon!). It could've been offensive for some, but hey, everything's offensive now a days.
Kristin Wiig showed an appearance as Aunt Linda, a recurring character that reviewed movies that has been absent from the show for nearly 2 years. I think it's great that SNL keeps thinking about bringing back old recurring characters, its so we still have a semblance of SNL in its previous days instead of making new characters, therefore, making us forget about the past. I liked how Linda didn't like Avatar!
SCHOOL DANCE:
In this sketch, Nasim Pedrad played a nerdy girl at a school dance who idolized her mom and barely went away from her. Tina Fey played that mother, who wanted her to go out and talk to her friends and dance with boys. While both main girls were great at acting in the scene, I was kind of bored, although parts of it were amusing.
AL ROKER SKETCH:
In this sketch, Kenan Thompson took the head as impersonating Al Roker, partying while on the job. He would occasionally go to a green screen in the same room and share the weather for the Today show. I thought it was funny, although I could barely understand Thompson in some parts. But when Thompson first showed up in the scene, I thought he was actually Al Roker... until he started talking.
LOLENE:
In the final sketch, Fey played a 9 inch hooker who was trying to save up enough money to go to Paris, France. She was in a bar, standing on the top of the table, while she was talking to the bartender (Bobby Moynahan), and two other bar-goers (I forgot the name! Don't judge me!). Bill Hader as the head of the orphanage comes in and tells everyone that he needs 1300 dollars to save his orphanage or it's being shut down, and Lolene (Tina Fey) gives him the money, and with it, her dream of going to Paris. I thought it was like a regular ending SNL sketch for me, a few giggles, you had no idea what was going on for a small part of it, but it still summed up the night in a nice way.
Tina Fey was great at hosting.
